Marriage counseling has much to offer a troubled relationship. The counselor provides the couple with objectivity and professionalism. This will not be biased by kinship or years of friendship. Counseling is a tool that assists couples to achieve a stronger marriage and a more enjoyable life.

Counseling, however, can only assist couples up to a point. The rest is up to the individual in the marriage. In order to reap the benefits that a marriage counselor can provide, couples must be willing to put in the hard work. They must be willing to implement changes and adopt suggestions recommended by the counselor. The counselor-couple relationship itself is a two way street. A counselor is not a magician; couples are the other important part of the equation in making sure counseling works.

1. Make sure that seeking counseling is also your partner’s idea. If your partner is not enthusiastic about seeking counseling, then the counseling might not work.

2. Keep an open mind. There should be no right and wrong. Don’t expect the counselor to point out to you that you are correct and your partner is out of line. Counseling offers an objective viewpoint and looks for ways to improve a marriage. If you truly want to save your marriage, it is not about tracking down the partner in the wrong.

3. Be willing to change what you are doing. If what you are doing currently in your marriage is not working, changes will need to be made. This might refer to a simple behavior, or it could be a significant life-changing behavior. Don’t be under any illusions. This can be difficult. But the potential rewards can be great.

4. Give it time. Slow down. Marriage counseling assists couples overcome significant events and actions in their lives. This is not something that can done overnight. To undertake effective marriage counseling, the professional needs to understand each partner and the relationship dynamics. It all takes time.

5. Be honest. Sometimes we think we have to hide or bury our feelings. We might believe our true thoughts will hurt our partner. We could feel embarrassed about our own feelings. It is important that we provide open and honest communication. If not, it will hinder the process.

Marriage counseling does work. There is no disputing this. The problem is that if a couple thinks they can visit a counselor and all will be fine, they are sadly mistaken. Apart from receiving marriage counseling, partners also need to work at it. This means giving it time, being willing to make behavioral changes, being honest, and not judging your partner.
